Will global climate change effect how lawn care businesses operate?

Grow does not consider itself an activist for the environment. The following comments are based strictly on what we believe to be of benefit to us all. Leadership, we believe, is being able to face the brutal facts of reality whatever they may be and acting accordingly.

Obviously the future is uncertain and can never be foretold. However, we feel we must keep an eye on the future. In particular how fuel consumption will be governed. Fuel is an extremely vital part of our industry. The evidence is clear that global climate change is real and that humans are a major contributor to this dramatic change. Although the dangers of climate change are unknown, the reality is fossil fuels are becoming less and less acceptable.

So what does this mean for us? We are just a simple horticulture company with our eyes on growing turf and plants, right? Well, if we continue to do what we have always done, our resources will continue to diminish and our world will get weaker and weaker. That is why together with the help of our Auto Asset Manager, we will be looking into alternative fuel solutions. We are especially looking into Hydrogen fuel cell power.

Hydrogen fuel has zero emissions, in fact it emits water. In some cases in order to create Hydrogen there are emissions but they are centralized and can be easily filtered in order to send less CO2 into the air. By starting now it may easier for us to adapt to the unknown regulations that will be placed on industries that consume large amounts of fossil fuels.

Fertilizer and pesticides are another area of concern for the environment. The big concern from most scientists is that lawn fertilizers are causing Red Tide blooms. It is said that the ground is inundated with fertilizer, more than it can handle and filter. So, as a result the fertilizer slowly finds it’s way into the gulf and bays. One of the biggest things that we can do, is to use slow release fertilizers.

Slow release fertilizers take longer to act and can deliver results that may not be acceptable in appearance to home owners. The appearance can be a light hue of yellow, leaving areas that can develop disease. An alternative to slow release fertilizers is organic fertilizer. (A side point about organic fertilizers – some fertilizers can be classified organic but have a chemical composition. In this article when referring to organic I intend it to refer to natural fertilizers only.) Organic fertilizer is much more expensive than traditional fertilizer and has a very powerful odor. That is why it has been very difficult for the market to accept true organic fertilizers.

However, it is something that must be explored. There are ways to get the desired look that we all wish to have in Florida and at the same time protect the environment. A varied combination of both organic and slow release may be the right fit for us or it may be necessary to add micro nutrients to slow release fertilizers in such a way that allows the complete release of the product into the plant material.

This is yet another area Grow will continue to explore as we move forward. Again, by starting now we will have a number of benefits. First, it will improve the habitat in which we live. Second, it will help us to better prepare for the costs that are associated with the changes. Third, it will put pressure on the entire community of Horticultural companies to improve the way we do business.

We all have a responsibility to protect our environment. If we can do so while delivering the best customer service in the world we are all better off for it. We hope the comments in this article alert you to the need that we all have to take action. Grow is a command to constantly improve ourselves, our employees and our community, we believe in that and will continue to do so.

Granted the things I have mentioned above are a few years away but we felt it would be a good idea to start educating our community in advance of the changes to come. We would love to hear your comments. Please write us at info@joingrow.com and have your voice heard.

Regards,

Tyler Kaulbars

As of February 2007 Kaulbars Lawns will be taking a new and exciting path. We will be changing our name to Grow.

Kaulbars Lawns has been in business now for more than 10 years. We started out with a borrowed lawn mower and a dream. What we do and how we do it on a daily basis is more than just horticulture. According to folks who knows us we are “flexible, responsive, caring, happy, service-oriented, personable, and committed to excellence.” But we are more than that. As we continue to grow we ask you to grow along with us and join the horticultural revolution.

As of February 2007 Kaulbars Lawns will be taking a new and exciting path. We will be changing our name to Grow.

With Grow you will continue to receive the same professional services you always have. Continuing under the same ownership as Kaulbars Lawns, our revolutionaries will uphold the service you have always received in the same friendly and caring manner.

We chose Grow since the purpose of any business pursuit no matter the desired outcome, context, or field of operation, is to grow not only in size but also in the relationship with its customers. Whether by natural progression and maturity or through a concerted effort and hard work, success yields growth. And for us, vice versa…Grow is not only an aspiration, it’s a command and a promise.
